GREEN FACTS:
Pandanus (or Wild Pineapple) is an environmentally friendly alternative to
seagrass.
Seagrass, a plant which grows in the coastal waters of East Africa, Southeast
Asia and the Caribbean, provides shelter to many varieties of nursery fish. It
is currently under threat from coastal development, dredging and urban
expansion. Pandanus on the other hand is a prolific weed which grows rapidly on
land even in adverse conditions. When woven it is almost indistinguishable from
seagrass.
Banana caskets are manufactured in Indonesia where banana leaves are an abundant
resource discarded by the agricultural industry. Banana sheaves come from the
trunk of the plant and peel off (or shed) naturally each year. Both the leaves and sheaves are collected and woven in ropes.
This design predominantly features banana and is accented with Pandanus and
plant dye pigmented Willow.
